Horror films are a movie genre seeking to elicit a negative emotional reaction from viewers by playing on the audience's most primal fears. They often feature scenes that startle the viewer through the means of macabre and the supernatural and they also do the physiological horror such as the Blair witch project also   some times they  may overlap with the fantasy and supernatural genre. Horrors frequently overlap with the thriller genre and they nearly always use special effects mainly to show gore .

Horror films deal with the viewer's nightmares, hidden worst fears, revulsions and terror of the unknown. Although a good deal of it is about the supernatural, if some films contain a plot about morbidity, serial killers, a disease/virus outbreak and surrealism, they may be termed "horror" they show this by doing a list of shots mainly using different height angles to show power and the threat by a character and also the other way round to show weakness of other characters .

Action film is a film genre where one or more heroes is thrust into a series of challenges that require physical feats, extended fights and frenetic chases. They occasionally have a resourceful character struggling against incredible odds such as, life-threatening situations, an evil villain,  the hero will usually have victory achieved at the end after difficult physical efforts and violence.

Story and character development are generally secondary to explosions, fist fights, gunplay and car chases. is classical sped up action with cut throat dialogue   lots of explosions and special effects  mainly on borders of realism and comedy and thriller there very easy to be intrigued  because they will make you relate with the character very quickly and usually that’s to understand the motives for the violence also you see a lot of track shots point of view shot and a lot non diegetic  pumped up music .

Crime stories in this genre often highlight the life of a crime figure or a crime's victims. Or they glorify the rise and fall of a particular criminals, gang, bank
robber, murderer or lawbreakers in personal power struggles or conflict with law and order figures, an underling or competitive colleague, or a rival gang.

Headline-grabbing situations, real-life gangsters, or crime reports have often been used in crime films. Gangster/crime films are usually set in large, crowded cities, to provide a view of the secret world of the criminal: dark nightclubs or streets with lurid neon signs, fast cars, piles of cash, sleazy bars, contraband, seedy living quarters or rooming houses. Exotic locales for crimes often add an element of adventure and wealth. Writers dreamed up appropriate gangland .

Gangster films are morality tales: Horatio Alger  success stories turned upside down in which criminals live in an inverted dream world of success and wealth. Often from poor immigrant families, gangster characters often fall prey to crime in the pursuit of wealth, status, and material possessions clothes and cars because all other "normal" avenues to the top are unavailable to them. Although they are doomed to failure and inevitable death usually violent, criminals are sometimes portrayed as the victims of circumstance, because the stories are told from their point of view.
Realism is going on the bases that you are just trying to make as relatable to the audiences as possible usually using a lot on natural lighting and realistic shots .

'Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels textual analysis
It’s a crime thriller genre

. The opening of the film is the compulsory showing of the film company that funded the film. The company that funded it was UNIVERSAL, so straight away you get an impression that this is a big budget movie, along with the first impression you're expectations are to assume it will be a slick Hollywood Movies. The nest frame shows the smaller company that actually directed it. It is called SKA, this smaller company is owned by Guy Ritchie who is also the director of the film. So when SKA is shown you realise that this film will break barriers in film techniques. The next shot is of the film credits, the background is all black that takes your attention to the credits and what they say. The writing is in a typewriter style, but in white , which makes it a total contrast.

There is no music whilst the starting credits are being shown, this is another way not to distract your attention by using harsh music or anything else that distracts you. After the credits it cuts to mid shot of a market stool first proper scene of the film, again there is no music which means the main focus is on the first character that is introduced. He is not formally introduced to us by name, it introduces us by showing us his personality. The first impression is that the film is going to be realistic. The lighting looks natural too, nothing that looks too false which holds up the genre of a crime sort of gangster film. Also the camera angles are associated with realism in filming techniques another way it will hold up the genre  .

The shots are over the shoulder, giving you the perspective of the crowd around him. The crowds faces are not focused in on, the main view point is on this mystery character that we have not yet been introduced to yet.So still not formally introduced, the actor beings to talk, he talks with a strong cockney accent, putting the first anchor in on being able to realise where the film is set.

The audience will have probably already assumed that the scene is in a large city like London. The character talks using slang language and humour, interacting with the audience around him. The connotation of this is that he is educated but not in a well off family, he speaks quickly without stuttering, and also has a lot of things to say,

Then later on in the scene we see chase from the police after these two characters and as they and running down the stares we see a slow motion of  the characters throwing the stolen goods and a cockney narrative starts introducing the characters this is link with the genre of crime and thriller and used a lot to show the genre more so on the crime gangster film and is now quite a classic thing to do with especially with British crime films .

Pleminary exercise

Pleminary exercise: Continuity task involving filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom he/ she then exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue. This task should demonstrate match on action, shot reverse shot and the 180 degree rule.
